Diff'rently the Same

Diff'rently the Same provides community support to fifteen individuals in Glasgow who have early onset of dementia and or Huntington's disease.  The service is offered from 0900 hours till 2200 hours Monday to Saturday.  The majority of activities and support is offered in the community, using non-segregated resources.

The service aims to maintain community presence, rather than closeting or restricting individuals.  By use of person centred planning an individual package of support is designed, based on the needs, wishes and interests of the individual receiving the service.  Ordinary living, social inclusion and recreation in community settings are the basis for the support provided.

Diff'rently the Same offers the following support:

  • Support to access leisure and social activities
  • Support in developing relationships or building networks or in maintaining existing friendships
  • Encouragement of individual interests and support to develop new interests
  • Support to access courses and activities at local colleges and further education centres
  • Support to access employment opportunities and work experience placements.

Support offered is mainly on a one to one basis.  Group or joint activities can be offered, but group situations would only be acceptable on the agreement of services users and would be justified on the grounds of friendship, peer support or shared interests.

Referrals:
Referrals to the service come from diverse sources including: social workers, and other workers in the statutory sector, community psychiatric nurses, GP's and consultants.  Voluntary sector agencies such as Alzheimer Scotland/Action on Dementia or the Huntington's Association Scotland (who both provide specialised information, advice and support).

Referrals can also be made directly from families and carers.  Any other referrals out with the two main referring agencies, which are made to the service for block funded places, will be considered in consultation with commissioning services.  Individuals with early on set dementia must be under 65 years of age.
