Turning Point Scotland Glasgow South East Community Recovery service is a community based service that provides structured group work programmes to support people to recover from substance misuse issues. I approached the service to ask if they would be interested in piloting a series of 5 ‘Carbon CAPability Workshops’ and was delighted when they said yes! Each of the sessions had a specific theme which we explored through group discussion, activities and videos, in a café style setting. Topics included: what causes climate change and its impacts; what are carbon footprints and how they are calculated; and how we can save energy in the choices we make at home, travel, food and purchases.

Thanks to all of the participants who contributed so thoughtfully to the discussions. Here are some of their comments:

  • ‘I thought I was aware of issues around climate change and our effect on it, but this was an eye-opener. Some of the statistics made me think twice about what and where I was buying, and if I needed to buy at all! It could have been dispiriting but the friendly facilitators showed that individual choices and changes can make a difference. Also, that doing good for the environment of the community, the local and global community, doesn’t have to cost money, but simply recycling, reusing or just refusing to buy stuff helps the Earth remain sustainable.’
  • Not quite knowing what to expect from the ‘Carbon Capability Workshop’, I was pleasantly surprised by my own enthusiasm and passion for the topics covered. I feel I have gained insightful and interesting knowledge and will carry the heart of the course with me in my day to day activities. I also feel it is important to be aware if not always able to live in a ‘Green’ a way as possible and thanks to the course I am now in a much better position to do this. Kind thanks again to Shivali and Luci for delivering the material and for all the treats, herbs and plants! Thank you also for introducing me to my first pansy eating experience!… It won’t be my last!’
  • ‘It’s helped my recovery, it’s part of my journey now’.
  • It’s really helped my social anxiety, I’ve got something now that I know about and can talk about …’
