Turning Point Scotland Edinburgh are continuing to offer service users in housing or benefits crisis an emergency toiletries pack.

The local ‘Bare Essentials’ initiative was started with a small donation given to the services by a service user’s family and staff have been looking at ways to fundraise and generate income to keep the initiative going.

Kate Hopkins, Support Worker said:

“We have been very lucky to receive the support of St Mary’s RC, a local primary school in Leith. I was invited in to speak to their Peace & Justice Breakfast Group (P4-P7) about Turning Point Scotland’s work with people who have experienced homelessness and our aims for the Bare Essentials initiative. This was a very enjoyable experience though slightly nerve-wracking at first! It was lovely to find a knowledgeable and interested group of pupils who asked a lot of really interesting questions!

They agreed to run a collection for Bare Essentials and I was invited in again to speak at their school assembly in March. When I arrived I was delighted to see how many items had been donated from the school and St Mary’s Star of the Sea, a local church. The school have been really supportive and welcoming and I want to say a big thank-you for all of their effort! The pupils have a Peace & Justice group and are keen to look at how they could raise more donations for Bare Essentials through a social enterprise project.

We have also received a lot of donations from the local Leith Community Champion for Tesco, NHS, Edinburgh University and our own friends and family. We have started issuing packs to service users who have been going into new tenancies, present in housing crisis, and/or are going into hospital or rehabilitation.

On behalf of all the staff at Turning Point Scotland Edinburgh I would like to say many thanks again for everyone’s support.”

They gave a presentation at a Soul Food Night for up to 100 homeless people at St Paul’s and St George’s Church on Broughton Street and will be promoting the Bare Essential project at the North East Recovery Hub Stall on Sat 13th June at Leith Gala Day.
