TPS gets a helping hand from staff at Lloyds banking group

27 October 2009

Turning Point Scotland's Opus of Aberdeen is to receive a garden makeover thanks to the staff of Lloyds Banking Group Large Corporate Department.  On Tuesday 27, October 2009, six volunteers from the local Lloyds Banking Group office and the Corporate Banking Department will be getting to work in the garden at 45-49 Holburn Street, Aberdeen.

The garden area is used by service users who receive vocational training, work experience and real work opportunities at Opus of Aberdeen.  Whilst the business exists to provide support to people experiencing or recovering from mental health issues it provides high quality services to the general public.

During breaks from their working hours, service users can sit in the garden area which is in desperate need of a facelift and was identified as something Lloyds could assist with as part of their corporate social responsibility project.  Their goal is to transform the area to provide service users with an attractive and relaxing space for use during their breaks.  To achieve this they plan to undertake the removal of old stone chips and level the ground before laying new ones.

TPS has paid for new fencing to be erected and the volunteers will paint this along with the garden walls.  They will build benches and a bird table; plant large planters and generally tidy up the garden.  The bank has sourced stone chips and a variety of tools they will need to undertake the work from one of their clients.

Service Manager, Patsy Telford, is delighted that Lloyds Banking Group has chosen Opus of Aberdeen to benefit from their voluntary work.  She said;

"We are really excited about the prospect of a beautiful new garden which will be of great benefit to service users who will now have the opportunity to enjoy some peace and tranquility throughout their working day.  We are immensely grateful that so many people from Lloyds Banking Group have volunteered their time to help us create a garden to be proud of and they can be rest assured that we will be putting it to good use."

James Waterson, Relationship Manager, Large Corporate, Lloyds Banking Group added:

"Lloyds has a long history of providing financial support to Turning Point Scotland, however Lloyds Corporate Banking has been looking for an opportunity to provide more hands on support for the fine work that they do. So when the chance came to muck in and help transform the back garden of Aberdeen Social Enterprises, we all jumped at the chance. The work of Opus makes a real positive difference and we were delighted to play a small part in supporting this."
