FLASHBACK a selection of recovery songs
25 January 2008
A group of adults who have worked together to change their lifestyle have written a book of songs about their recovery journey. Launched at South East Alternatives in the heart of the Gorbals today the book contains thoughts, feelings and emotions.
Turning Point Scotland's South East Alternative service provides person centred approaches to individuals with substance misuse issues. In the past six months, the service has seen over 140 individuals, most of whom have accessed the service for the first time.
The service ran a regular music therapy group. This gives individuals the chance to listen to a variety of songs and to express their thoughts and feelings. This led to the group writing their own songs based around these feelings and their recovery story.
Alex Henderson, 30 started to attend South East Alternatives to deal with his substance misuse issues and to add structure to his life. Alex has re-built his relationship with his son and is now in his third year at college doing an HNC in Social Care. Speaking about the music therapy class, he comments:
"I really enjoyed attending the class. Music therapy has allowed me to express my feelings and let me get a lot of stuff out of my head onto paper, which I have found very beneficial."
Kirsty Souter, 23 said:
"Attending the class has made me realise that not all answers lie at the bottom of a bottle."
Iain McNeill who coordinates the music therapy class added that the groups were fun and creative. He says:
"Any budding or established song writers out there could do far worse than covering one of these songs. Just make sure the royalties go to the right people!"
