Press Release
Date: Tuesday 31 March 2009
New Autism service for Dumfries and Galloway to open on World Autism Day
An innovative new drop-in and information base in Wigtownshire, aimed at supporting local people affected by Autism is opening this Thursday 2 April 2009 to coincide with World Autism Day. The opening takes place at 11.30am at the Creebridge House Hotel, Newton Stewart. You are invited to attend.
The new project is being opened in response to the increasing need for skilled provision to support local adults with Autism, Asperger’s Syndrome and their family or carers. It aims to improve the existing support available to adults by developing a variety of skill development, health and well-being and work experience opportunities. The local information base and drop-in facility will offer support, while joint staff training for organisations involving families as partners in new models of shared learning will help to determine service direction and increase community awareness and involvement.
The project is operated by ‘Partners in Autism,’ a local autism initiative which involves social care charity Turning Point Scotland (TPS), which already has an established autism specific service in Newton Stewart, Dumfries and Galloway Council and ‘Building Healthy Communities’ (NHS Dumfries and Galloway).
Speaking on behalf of the partnership, Beth Bleasdale, Manager of the D&G Council Activity and Resource Centre in Newton Stewart said: “We are delighted to be opening this new information base for the people of Dumfries and Galloway on World Autism Day. Our priority is to respond to individual needs by involving people using the project and their families in influencing its direction.
“The focus is positive, using individual interests and talents to increase understanding of communication, social situations and coping with unexpected or unfamiliar situations which people may find difficult.
“It comes at a time when Dumfries and Galloway Council has identified Wigtownshire to the Scottish Government as a pilot area for personalised, self–directed support, a national development enabling people to have greater say in how they wish their support to be provided.”
Funding from Turning Point Scotland's Innovation Fund and The Holywood Trust establishes the initiative over the next three years with the employment of a part-time development worker and clerical assistant, and part of the project being specifically directed towards adolescents and young adults.
Catriona Harrison, a service user who has recently joined the project said: “This is helping me understand and challenge some of the difficulties I have in life. I also have been enjoying meeting new people and socialising more.”
Rachel Williamson, whose son accesses the project said: “The project seems to ‘tune in’ to the needs of young adults, which is most important. It is worth the hundred mile journey, he’s enjoying it so much.”’
