Renfrewshire - The Mile End Project

The Renfrewshire Learning Disability Service has undergone a period of growth and change and as a result we are currently in the process of reshaping our service.  In response to this at the end of July 2006 our service was split into two separate services with a Service Manager responsible for each service.  The 2 projects are The Mile End Project and Weavers Mill.

Background
The Renfrewshire Learning Disability Service was originally established in partnership with Renfrewshire Council in June 2001 to support individuals being resettled from long stay learning disability hospitals such as Merchiston Hospital.

We support individuals who have moved from their family home or from other community resources in addition to the individuals from the hospital resettlement programmes.

Our service has grown steadily since this time and we now support 37 individuals in their own homes across a variety of housing options in The Mile End and Weavers Mill Projects.

In addition to Renfrew Council we also work in partnership with Glasgow City Council and East Renfrewshire Council.

Housing is provided either by Renfrewshire Council or by locally based housing associations with each individual having their own secure housing tenure.

The Mile End Project

  • We are registered and regulated by the Care Commission with inspections being carried out annually.
  • The project is spread throughout Renfrewshire including Paisley, Renfrew, Erskine and Barrhead.
  • We support 21 individuals.
  • We provide support for people with Learning/Physical Disabilities who live either on their own or share with others.
  • Each service user has their own tenancy in their own or shared house.
  • We support service users to become integrated in their local community
  • Each service user has their own individualised care package tailored to fulfil their needs and aspirations.
  • We use person centred planning and individual support plans which detail the service users' needs, desires and goals.
  • We encourage and support our service users to utilise local facilities such as college courses, leisure and social activities.
  • Each service user has a key worker who is responsible for co-ordinating each individual's person centred support plan.
  • Turning Point Scotland are committed in training staff for the job they are employed to do
  • We work in partnership with external agencies such as Social Work and community healthcare teams to ensure our service users' needs are fully met.

Referrals
The Mile End Project works in partnership with Renfrewshire Council.  At present access to our services are solely through direct referral and commissioning by Renfrewshire Council's Social Work Department.  We will, however, give advice on this process to anyone interested in our services.
