About Skelmorlie
Skelmorlie is a pleasant coastal village situated on the West Coast of Scotland. Main line rail services run from both neighbouring village Wemyss Bay and nearby seaside resort Largs with services to Glasgow city, whilst Glasgow and Prestwick airports are 26 miles and 32 miles distant respectively.
The Skelmorlie service is a short taxi ride from Wemyss Bay railway station
Environment
Skelmorlie offers accomodation for two people and has been adapted and decorated to be sensitive to the specific preferences of the people we support, with attention placed on colour schemes and the layout of each room. The house offers separate living areas on two floors with additional shared rooms. More specifically, there is a spacious bedroom and living room and bathroom upstairs and a shared kitchen on the ground floor. There is an outdoor patio area and access to a large lawned garden. The house is situated in a quiet residential area, with a good selection of local amenities within walking distance.
Creating a structured, safe and supportive environment is one of the most effective ways of enabling a person with autism to live in their own home. We have created this at our service in Skelmorlie by:
- Assessing adapting and reviewing the physical structure of buildings and the environment.
- Developing approaches to respond to people's individual sensitivities to light, noise, heat, touch and smell.
- Managing and minimising change to structure, routine and the environment
Training
As an organisation, Turning Point Scotland invests heavily in staff training. We recognise the direct relationship there is between a skilled workforce and being successful in supporting the individual and the sometimes challenging needs that people have.
The staff team at Skelmorlie receive an ongoing and comprehensive programme of training which involves both generic training like Person Centred Planning, Report Writing, Administration of Medication etc. and autism specific training which TPS has designed and delivers itself. There are two different autism courses - Level One provides an overview of how autism can affect individuals in all aspects of live and the challenges they face in daily life. Level Two builds on this to enable people to directly relate the knowledge of the level 1 course to the actual lives of the people they support.
Staff are also give Quality Assured Crisis Intervention training and techniques for de-escalation and all of the current staff team are trained to SVQ (NVQ) Level 3 or above.
Standards
In practice Turning Point Scotland understands there is no standard model of providing support to people and therefore effective partnerships and Person Centred approaches are critical in order for support to be effective and sustainable.
As well as attaining high practice standards, Turning Point Scotland recognises the need to continuously improve on what we do; we have been accredited by ‘Investors in People' for 10 years, registered by the Care Commission and have been assessed by the Scottish Qualifications Authority as meeting the ‘Committed to Excellence' EFQM standard. In December 2007, Turning Point Scotland also invited the Social Work Inspection Agency (SWIA) to independently audit four key areas of organisational governance - Leadership, Openess, Accountability and Integrity and each area scored significantly well.
