Turnaround

The Turnaround leaflet is available for download here.

Turnaround service will focus on young men aged 18-30 years whose offending is persistent, high volume, low tariff and who are failing in other community-based alternatives, or who have had multiple remand or short-term prison sentences, with priority to those individuals who may be vulnerable due to substance misuse, mental health issues, homelessness, lack of coping/social skills etc.

Turnaround is based on the model piloted in the 218 women's service in Glasgow city, where a holistic, person centred and needs led approach is taken to help service users consider their offending, its causes, the impact on victims and communities and at strategies for moving forward.

Turnaround will work jointly with services within the community to offer these interventions within an inter-agency approach. An opportunity for a period of safe supported accomodation for the most vunerable will be available in the near future.

With referrals coming from the courts, criminal justice social work and the Scottish Prison Service, Turnaround will offer assessment, support planning, one-to-one and group interventions to service users within their own communities, with an opportunity for a period of safe supported accommodation for the most vulnerable.

Interventions in Turnaround will include offender awareness, substance misuse programmes, anger management, parenting, social skills, confidence and esteem building, employability and life skills.

Turnaround is a unique partnership between three national voluntary sector agencies (Turning Point Scotland, Apex Scotland and Venture Trust), each with their own experience, skills and expertise to offer our service users.  The service will cover the North Strathclyde and South West Scotland Community Justice Authority areas.

The four day services are based over two Community Justice Authority areas (CJA's). Within the North Strathclyde CJA there is a base in Inverclyde and West Dumbarton.  Within the South West Scotland CJA there is a base in Irvine and Kilmarnock.

Turning Point Scotland will provide the initial assessment and support planning for service users.  With a duty team to provide swift responses to court requests and four community-based teams they will support the offender through their individual support plan, providing one-to-one support and facilitating group work as well as liaising with care managers, the partners and other appropriate agencies.

They will also provide the opportunity for supported accommodation for the most vulnerable or chaotic individuals at the earliest stage of service to give them a ‘safe' place to stabilise.

Apex Scotland will provide a structured programme which increases employability, personal and team working skills, considers local labour markets, potential employers, and gives service users a personal understanding of the steps they will require to take to move into employment, further education or training.  The programme includes one to one work for specific, individualised employability work, goal setting, action planning and reviews whilst presentation, talks and workshops are delivered on a group work basis.

Venture Trust will offer service users the opportunity to participate in their ‘Chance for Change' programme.  The programme consists of day-long training sessions held over two months followed by a 7-day expedition, a home visit, a post-course review and a follow-up at six months' post-course.  The focus of the course is to develop life skills such as communication, planning and problem solving as well as personal and social skills, enabling service users to more confidently re-enter the community.  It is designed to better equip the participants to deal with issues regarding through-care, employability and their family relationships, providing a strengthened position to reduce re-offending.
