Substance Misuse Services

Turning Point Scotland manages substance misuse services which include major residential and crisis units as well as smaller community based services.  We also provide services which supports substance misusers who find themselves in the criminal justice system and specific services which provide arrest referral and diversion from prosecution.

Figures show that in the first six months of 2006, Turning Point Scotland has supported 9,759 service users in the substance misuse services.  Currently, we provide sixteen services throughout Scotland in locations ranging from city centres such as Edinburgh and Glasgow to remote rural locations such as Banff in the north of Scotland.  

From January to June 2006, 2,924 service users accessed our substance misuse services for the first time. 

The variety of sustance misuse based services that Turning Point Scotland provides reflects the differences found within communities.  Each service user faces different issues: some may be in a crisis, unable to cope and at a risk; while others may be stabilised and looking to attain employment opportunities. 

Turning Point Scotland is here to provide a service to each service user in a person centred way in order to meet the diverse needs within local communities. 

Harm Reduction
Harm Reduction is a set of practical strategies that reduce negative consequences of substance misuse, incorporating a spectrum of strategies from safer use, to managed use to abstinence. 

Harm Reduction demands that interventions and policies designed to serve substance misusers reflect specific individual and community needs, there is no universal definition of, or formula for implementing harm reduction.
