South Ayrshire Independent Living (SAIL), previously South Ayrshire Supported Living Service, was set up when Turning Point Scotland were awarded part of the contract to provide supported living to people moving from Arrol Park and Strathlea resource centre’s into their own houses.

SAIL provides support to people with learning disabilities in their own tenancies.  The service receives funding from South Ayrshire Council and ILF to provide a package of care suited to individual needs. We can also offer support to people who have personalised and self-directed budgets.  SAIL works closely with the retraction social worker and current support teams to identify how each service user can be supported to have a fulfilling life.  This is done through empowerment and independence.  A comprehensive support plan is put together and updated on a regular basis.

SAIL supports people who have moved from a range of settings.  Some lived in Resource Centres, whilst others moved from their parental homes, firstly being supported by the Viewpoint service, parents then opted to us use as a service as they were happy with the service their family member had been receiving.
Each service user lives in their own house supported by a staff team, the size of which is determined by the needs of the individual.   Staff teams are recruited to match as much as possible with service users and this is achieved by having a family member or someone who knows them well participating in the interview process. Also, the people we support are involved in the interview process from start to finish in varying ways, by helping with the applications forms, meeting and greeting at interviews and being part of the interview panel.  Staff are trained in a variety of courses during their induction and we offer specialised training in areas that are specific to the person they are supporting.
Support is person centered and gives each individual the opportunity to live and socialise in their local community.  Support can be offered for any or every area of an individual’s life including:

• Promoting Independence
• Supporting individuals to meet their goals and aspirations
• Promoting life experiences such as attending college courses, jobs, and activities
• Personal care
• Socialising
• Maintaining family links
• Existing friendships and facilitating new relationships
• Facilitate outings and holidays.
