Turning Point Scotland and Second Chance Project Scotland are established voluntary sector providers of substance misuse services in Glasgow. Turning Point Scotland and Second Chance Project Scotland have been working in different areas of the city, with varying but complementary approaches to building abstinence based services and outcomes in community rehabilitation. In April this year a new joint service was developed to pool existing resources to create The Glasgow Abstinence Project (GAP) covering the North East, North West and South sectors of the city.
The Glasgow Abstinence Project (GAP) has been successful in securing funding from Glasgow ADP to increase abstinence based treatment options in the city.
Our brief is to achieve that goal by offering additional programmes that link in with existing treatment provision and rehabilitation.
Turning Point Scotland and Second Chance are working together to achieve those goals. We are doing that by:
- Ensuring that in each area of the city there is a year long community rehabilitation service offering clear staged recovery programmes that increase abstinence in participants. We call this the Glasgow model, using any recovery path to achieve abstinence. Second Chance will build this in the North West, South East Alternatives in the South, and Milestone in the North East.In the south a new Phase 1 and 2 will be run from the GDCC to add to abstinence programmes there. In the East there will be pre entry programmes run to increase the number of people taking up existing community rehab places. In the West , the 12 week programme will become a year long programme.
- We will make consistent contribution to ongoing recovery by training graduates of these programmes to be Volunteers in the year long programmes in each sector. The City Wide Recovery Volunteer Task force is being supported by Milestone
- We will make consistent contribution to ongoing recovery and abstinence by offering the SUSTAIN programme, an evening programme of courses that help sustain long term recovery in the community. SEA is supporting the SUSTAIN programme which is also available for staff development.

This is a new concept in the Glasgow area.
The Project is based on the tried and tested 12 Step Minnesota Model of recovery and the full program lasts 90 days – the main activities during this period are 1:1 counselling, group and gender specific counselling, workshops, health education, fitness classes and holistic therapies.
